On June 18, Malia and Sasha Obama were seen in public alongside their parents, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, during the inauguration of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. This event, which attracted numerous celebrities, celebrated the opening of a complex on the South Side that features a museum, a public park, performance spaces, and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library.

This appearance was significant for Malia, 27, and Sasha, 25, who have largely maintained a low profile since their family left the White House nearly ten years ago. While they have occasionally joined their parents at family events and select high-profile occasions, they have mostly kept their lives private.

Malia has been carving out a niche in the film industry, collaborating with Donald Glover on projects such as the Amazon Prime series 'Swarm' and directing her short film 'The Heart,' which premiered at prestigious festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, and Sundance Film Festival. In 2024, she described her film as a narrative about 'lost objects and lonely people, forgiveness and regret,' aiming to showcase 'where tenderness and closeness can exist' and to remind viewers of those who are often overlooked.

In contrast, Sasha has kept a more subdued public presence, making occasional appearances with her family, such as at the NBA All-Star Game in February 2026. The Obama sisters were just 10 and 7 years old when their father was elected president in 2008 and 18 and 15 when he completed his term in 2017. Since then, they have primarily been seen in family photos and at rare public events.

Barack and Michelle Obama have frequently discussed their daughters' desire for privacy and their encouragement to pursue independent careers away from the political arena.
