Jude Bellingham has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of football’s most genuine and humble figures after sending a touching farewell gift to outgoing Real Madrid midfielder Caroline Weir. The Scotland international is concluding a remarkable four-year journey in the Spanish capital following the end of her contract.
A thoughtful gesture from Madrid’s midfield maestro
Bellingham’s presence at Real Madrid continues to extend beyond his on-field performances. The England international, known for his maturity and grace, took time to acknowledge Weir’s departure in a heartfelt manner. As the 30-year-old prepared to move from Madrid to Lyon, she revealed that Bellingham had sent her a signed jersey along with a personal note. The message from the former Borussia Dortmund star read: “To Caroline. It has been a pleasure getting to know you. All the best with your next step with lots of love and admiration!”
Reflecting on the gesture, Weir was full of admiration for her younger colleague. “Jude and I have spoken several times. We’ve always got on well and had nice conversations about the club and about Madrid. For him to write that message – I would have been happy with just the signed shirt – but that message shows what a classy person he is. He’s a great guy and it was a really lovely touch,” she told The Guardian.
Leaving a legacy at Real Madrid
Weir departs Los Blancos as a true club legend, having left an indelible mark in their history. Across her 125 appearances for the club, she scored 63 goals and contributed 40 assists, making her Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer. Despite her individual brilliance, she bows out after four seasons as league runners-up behind Barcelona each year.
“I look back with very happy memories, both on and off the pitch,” Weir reflected. “My only regret is that we didn’t win that first league title. But apart from that, I’m really proud of what I achieved and the impact I had on the team. Madrid, me, and my husband – we were very happy there. It’s an amazing lifestyle and an incredible city. But I feel like that chapter came to its natural conclusion, and I was ready for a new challenge.”
Chasing Champions League glory
Weir’s move to Lyon marks an exciting new chapter in her career, offering the chance to compete for top honours. The French club, crowned European champions eight times, represents a major opportunity for the midfielder to add continental silverware to her career achievements. Weir has signed a three-year deal with the French giants and expressed her excitement about working under Jonatan Giraldez.
“At this point in my career, I want to keep pushing myself,” she said. “I want to be competing for trophies and playing alongside the best players. I would love to be in contention for the Champions League. It’s extremely tough to reach semi-finals and finals, and even harder to win it – but I want to be part of a club that prepares to be in that position come the end of the season.”
Scotland ambitions and World Cup dreams
As Weir settles into life in France, her focus also remains firmly on leading Scotland to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The national team captain has been in outstanding form, scoring seven goals in her last two appearances for the country. Inspired by the recent success of the Scotland men’s team, Weir is determined to deliver a similar story on the global stage.
“Going to Brazil for a World Cup – that’s the dream,” Weir said. “It’s right at the top of my list. Of course, winning the Champions League at club level is huge, but taking Scotland to a World Cup would be just as special. We’ve completed the first step by reaching the playoffs, and now we’re looking forward to that challenge later this year. We’ll take it one step at a time.”
