The results of Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections have also come. India Alliance did not get even one of the two seats here. In such a situation, INDIA Alliance has suffered a big blow. Out of the two seats here, one seat was won by JMM candidate Baidyanath Ram and the other seat was won by NDA supported independent candidate Parimal Nathwani. Parimal Nathwani defeated Congress candidate Pranab Jha. In such a situation, in the elections held for 27 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states, NDA got 19 seats and INDIA got only 5 seats. With this result, NDA's position in Rajya Sabha has also become stronger. With this figure, NDA has come close to two-third majority in Rajya Sabha.

In which states was the competition expected?

In the Rajya Sabha elections of 10 states, a contest between the two parties was expected only in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. Due to disqualification of Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan in Madhya Pradesh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got one seat without any contest.

Overall, out of 27 seats, NDA got 19 and INDIA block got five seats. Now NDA has 152 seats and INDIA has 63 seats in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. With the help of BJD and YSRCP they have 5 and 7 seats. In such a situation, NDA can reach the two-third majority mark of 164 seats in Rajya Sabha.

Why increased competition?

The contest in Jharkhand increased because Nathwani, who was a Rajya Sabha member of YSR Congress Party, decided to contest the elections as an independent candidate with the support of NDA. To win in the 81-member assembly, Nathwani needed 28 first preference votes. JMM has 34 MLAs, Congress has 16, Rashtriya Janata Dal has four and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation has two. JMM alone had 34 MLAs. Therefore his victory was certain. He got 30 votes.

The NDA, which had 24 MLAs (including 21 from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and one MLA each from Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), All Jharkhand Students Union Party and Janata Dal (United)), needed four more first preference votes.
