GUWAHATI, June 19: The Minister for Industries and Commerce, Bimal Borah, announced that investments totaling Rs two lakh crore are currently at various stages of execution in Assam.

In an interview, Borah highlighted that during the Investment Assam Summit 2, which took place in February of the previous year, agreements were made for investments amounting to Rs five lakh crore in the state. He noted that Rs two lakh crore of these investments are actively being implemented.

According to Borah, some industries have commenced production, while others are either under construction or in the planning phase. Once completed, these projects are expected to significantly enhance the state's economy. He also mentioned that the progress of the signed agreements is being closely monitored at the highest levels of government.

The Minister emphasized that investors are finding the state's new customized policy appealing. Under this policy, investments exceeding Rs 100 crore that create jobs for over 200 local residents will receive government support in the form of road connectivity, power, and water supply. This initiative is designed to benefit local communities by providing essential facilities.

When asked about land allocation challenges for industries, Borah stated that the Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) and Assam Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (AIIDC) possess sufficient land. However, issues arise when large plots are required, often leading to local opposition against land allotment for industrial use.

“There should be no objections if government land is allocated to industries. Unfortunately, some individuals with ulterior motives incite local communities to resist,” he explained.

He cited an example where the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council allocated land to an industry, but faced local protests and opposition.

Borah also mentioned that the semiconductor project is expected to begin production by the end of this year, which would be a significant milestone for the state. This project is poised to be the first of its kind in India and has already garnered international interest, with foreign business delegations making it a point to visit the site during their trips to the state.
