Fans in the United States were treated to another night of thrilling World Cup action, though viewers in the United Kingdom likely did not regret missing one particularly distressing moment.

The second round of group stage matches at the World Cup 2026 unfolded overnight, and while the football on display was spectacular, one incident cast a shadow over the celebrations. Co-hosts Canada registered their first-ever World Cup victory in emphatic fashion, routing Qatar 6-0. Jonathan David was the star of the night, netting a stunning hat-trick that firmly places him in contention for the Golden Boot award.

Yet, Canada’s historic triumph was overshadowed by a severe injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, who was rushed to hospital with a suspected broken leg. The incident occurred when Qatar’s Assim Madibo fouled Kone near the technical area, prompting Canada manager Jesse Marsch to reveal that everyone on the bench “could hear the bone snap”.

Marsch said after the match, “I haven’t spoken to Ismael yet; he’s at the hospital and will prepare for surgery. I plan to visit him after this press conference. We’ll decide what’s best for him once the doctors have confirmed the extent of the injury. His family is there with him. It happened right in front of our bench – everyone could hear the bone snap.”

He added, “Your heart goes out to him. The whole team was shaken because of the nature of the injury and because Ismael is such an important part of this squad. Yet, even while being stretchered off, he was waving to the crowd, trying to calm everyone down. That says everything about his character. This group has a special spirit, and I’ve said that for two years. It shows in moments of both adversity and triumph. Today was a reflection of that. Everyone was devastated when it happened, but we knew Ismael would want us to finish the job.”

Following a VAR review, Madibo was shown a red card for the reckless challenge, leaving Qatar with nine men after Homam Ahmed’s earlier dismissal in the first half.

After the final whistle, there was a heated exchange between Marsch and Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui. Alongside David’s hat-trick, Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also found the net, while a Mohamed Manai own goal completed the 6-0 rout, making it a night of mixed emotions for the Canadian side.

Elsewhere, fellow co-hosts Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara. Luis Romo scored the decisive goal, pouncing on a loose ball after South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu failed to hold onto a cross following a collision with defender Lee Gi-hyuk inside the box. The goal secured Mexico’s place in the last 32 with a match to spare.

As a result, Mexico are guaranteed to finish top of Group A, ensuring they will continue to play on home soil in the round of 32 and possibly the round of 16, should they advance further.
