Harry Kane described England’s post-match celebration of their World Cup opener as one of the most memorable moments of his career, after fans and players joined together to sing the unofficial anthem following their 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas. The England captain said the song represented the strong connection between the team and their supporters.

England and fans celebrate in unison after opening victory

England kicked off their World Cup campaign in style, defeating Croatia 4-2 in Dallas on Wednesday. Kane scored twice, equalling Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals and leading the Three Lions to a confident start to the tournament. Yet, the highlight came after the final whistle, when the players joined travelling fans in a passionate rendition of the Oasis hit, creating an unforgettable atmosphere inside the stadium.

Kane reflects on the special scenes in Dallas

Speaking on the Lions Den, Kane said that the post-match celebration ranked among his most cherished experiences in an England shirt. He emphasised the emotional significance of sharing that song with the fans after the victory.

“That was one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt and especially at a major tournament,” Kane said. “I know it’s only the first game, and we’re not getting carried away, but that emotional connection with the fans means everything. They can see how much it means to us too.”

“We’ve built that connection now, but that moment, singing together in the stadium, everyone knowing the words, was really special,” he added. “For a first game, to have that kind of support both in the stadium and back home — we know there were plenty of celebrations going on, probably with a bit of beer flying about since it was a night match — we absolutely love that energy.”

Renewed spirit under Tuchel

Since taking over, Thomas Tuchel has worked to strengthen unity and togetherness in the England squad while continuing the cultural foundations laid by Gareth Southgate. Kane noted that the current group feels different from past tournament squads. Alongside John Stones and Jordan Pickford, he remains one of the few players from the 2018 World Cup semi-final team.

“This one feels a little different,” he explained. “Our roles have evolved a bit — we’re now the more experienced, senior guys. There aren’t many players left from those earlier tournaments, so there’s a freshness in this squad. You can see the hunger, the desire, and the excitement from everyone, wanting to be part of what could be a special summer.”

Next up: Ghana challenge

The victory over Croatia has given England a strong platform in Group L, but their next challenge will be against Ghana. Kane is expected once again to lead the attack as the Three Lions aim to secure qualification to the next round.
