The BBC was compelled to modify its World Cup highlights broadcast after accidentally airing the disturbing audio of Canada midfielder Ismael Kone suffering a serious leg fracture. The 24-year-old endured the horrific injury following a late challenge during a Group B match against Qatar, leaving his Canadian teammates visibly distressed by the incident.
Audio muted after match for sensitivity
The broadcaster removed the original audio from its iPlayer highlights after stadium microphones at BC Place clearly picked up the sound of the break. Although the challenge itself remains visible, the segment was edited to exclude any close-up or graphic footage. A BBC representative confirmed that necessary steps were taken to safeguard viewers and offered best wishes to Kone for a swift recovery from the ordeal.
Manager recounts distressing moment on sidelines
Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch appeared visibly shaken post-match and revealed that the impact of the tackle was audible even from the technical area. He remarked, “You could hear the bone snap. Your heart goes out to him. Everyone’s shaken for him.”
A BBC spokesperson later clarified the reasons behind the broadcast edits, stating: “We adjusted the audio on iPlayer from the Canada versus Qatar World Cup highlights programme because of the sensitivity surrounding Ismael Kone’s injury. We took all appropriate steps, refrained from showing any replays of the tackle or footage of the player in distress, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Lengthy recovery anticipated
The former Watford and Marseille midfielder, who has recently made his mark in Serie A with Sassuolo, now faces an extensive rehabilitation period estimated at four to five months while awaiting surgery.
Marsch further commented: “Ismael is such a great lad. He’s far from perfect, but that’s what makes him special. He can do something brilliant one moment and lose focus the next. He represents so much of what this team is about. It’s a huge blow for us, but we’ll make sure he gets the best medical care. He’s got a bright future and remains central to what we’re building.”
Canada eye knockout qualification
With four points and currently topping Group B, Canada are set to face Switzerland in a decisive final group-stage fixture on Wednesday, June 24. Victory in that match would secure their progression as group winners. Marsch will need to adjust his midfield setup to compensate for the absence of Kone as the team pushes forward in their World Cup campaign.
