The United States currently sit at the top of Group C following a confident victory over Australia.
After cruising past the Socceroos, the US Men’s National Team have now collected six points from their first two matches. Mauricio Pochettino has been widely praised for instilling unity within the American squad during their home World Cup campaign.
Although the United States’ win on the field appeared straightforward, there was a brief interruption before the result was officially confirmed.
Australia were comfortably beaten in the first half, as Pochettino’s team started strongly in Seattle. The second half saw a more measured tempo, with the USA controlling the match and securing back-to-back victories – their first such achievement in this competition since 1930.
The United States triumphed 2-0, but towards the end of the game, there was a moment of uncertainty about whether they would be able to conclude the match smoothly – and the reason had nothing to do with the opposition.
Referee Felix Zwayer suffered a cramp on the Lumen Field pitch and required assistance from one of his linesmen to stretch his leg.
The match was temporarily halted while the German official recovered from the injury, creating an awkward moment before he regained his footing and oversaw the final few minutes of play.
No match at the 2026 World Cup has yet faced a prolonged stoppage so far.
Just a day earlier, Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone sustained a double leg fracture during a co-hosts’ fixture that saw nine minutes of stoppage time – the longest delay of the tournament up to this point, reminiscent of last summer’s Club World Cup when electrical storms caused multiple interruptions.
