WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new Android home screen widget that will let users record and send voice messages faster without opening the app. This upcoming feature aims to make one of WhatsApp’s most frequently used functions significantly more accessible, allowing Android users to capture voice notes directly from their phone’s home screen.

How the Voice Note Widget Will Work

The new widget will appear directly on the phone’s home screen and will act as a shortcut for recording voice messages. Users will be able to tap the widget, start recording immediately, and choose the recipient once the voice note is ready. The widget uses a default size of 3×1 for an Android home screen, but it can be resized according to user preference.

The UI is very basic; just a small tile with the microphone icon with instructions to “tap to record.” On tap, the widget allegedly starts a voice message, which is then sent after a prompt from WhatsApp to choose the contact to send the message. The new widget will support sending voice messages to a single contact or multiple people at the same time, making it convenient for group communications.

Current Development Status

The voice message widget is still in development, and WhatsApp has not announced when it will be available for all users. According to WABetaInfo, a home screen widget is in development and was discovered embedded in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.24.2though it is not yet available for testing. The widget is currently under development and has not yet reached beta testers, but it gives an idea of how WhatsApp plans to make frequently used features easier to access.

Benefits for WhatsApp Users

This feature will be especially useful for users who send voice messages regularly throughout the day and want to save time. Instead of navigating through the app, opening a chat, and then tapping the microphone icon, users can record and send voice notes with just a single tap from their home screen. The widget is said to be particularly beneficial for those who frequently send voice messages to colleagues, family members, or friends and want quicker access to this functionality.

Timeline and Availability

WhatsApp has not confirmed when the voice note widget will be rolled out to all Android users. The feature is still being developed and tested internally. Once it reaches beta testing, users will likely see it in upcoming beta versions before the official release. Given WhatsApp’s typical rollout pattern, the widget could arrive globally within a few months after beta testing begins.
