TV presenter France Pierron has issued a public apology after drawing sharp criticism for her comments about Belgian winger Jeremy Doku's decision to leave the national squad temporarily during the 2026 World Cup to be present for the birth of his first child.

The controversy erupted on Friday during a debate on the French television programme L'Equipe de Choc. During the discussion, Doku, who is representing Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, mentioned that he might step away from the team in July to witness the birth of his child. Pierron reacted critically, stressing the exceptional nature of participating in a World Cup tournament.

“You must understand that taking part in a World Cup is a privilege, an incredible joy. Hundreds of footballers would give anything to be in your position; it may never happen again in your life. It’s a truly special experience, a childhood dream fulfilled,” she stated on air before controversially adding, “And you’re going to step away from all that to attend the birth of your child, which is, excuse my language, a disgusting moment, where the father is useless—just an extra.”

Her remarks immediately sparked outrage online. Viewers and social media users strongly condemned Pierron’s comments, accusing her of dismissing the significance of fatherhood and family commitments. As criticism mounted, including from her professional peers, Pierron took to her personal X account to clarify her stance and issue an apology. She explained that her words represented her personal view and not that of her employer or the show's production team.

“I was sharing a personal opinion within the context of a debate. These comments are mine alone and do not represent a collective position. I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some people, and I sincerely apologise,” she wrote, adding, “My intention was never to undermine the importance of fathers or their role with their partners and children.”

Meanwhile, Jeremy Doku, who plays for Manchester City, has stood firm on his decision, emphasising that family remains his top priority even amid the pressure of competing at the World Cup. “It will depend on when it happens, but it’s my first child, and I really want to be there,” he told reporters earlier in the week.

The 24-year-old further explained, “If you ask me what I want, I’d say that no one wishes to miss the birth of their first child. But I also know that football involves many other factors. I’m aware that the federation supports its players and understands their situations. We’ll see what we can do.”

The discussion about Doku’s potential absence comes at a challenging moment for Belgium. The winger has been struggling with fitness issues that have disrupted his form during the tournament. Following a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match, Belgium are fighting to stay alive in a competitive Group D. Reports indicate that Doku is dealing with a recurring respiratory infection, which has already ruled him out of the crucial upcoming match against Iran.
