Manchester United have concluded a strong campaign, securing third place in the Premier League.

However, many supporters recognise that the squad still requires substantial reinforcement to become genuine contenders both domestically and in Europe next season.

The club have already reached an agreement for Brazil’s Ederson, marking the start of a comprehensive midfield rebuild. United are also showing significant interest in Mateus Fernandes, Alex Scott, and Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Midfield additions are not the only focus for the Red Devils. The club have also been linked with left backs such as Lewis Hall and left wingers including Crysencio Summerville.

There is speculation that United could look to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Altay Bayindir, with Sam Johnstone and Karl Darlow among the names mentioned.

Additionally, the club are reportedly considering signing an experienced forward as a back-up option in case Joshua Zirkzee leaves during the summer window.

Journalist Sully has now provided further insight into Manchester United’s plans for the centre-back position.

He stated, “Centre back is a position which isn’t as high on the priority list as others, but it is being evaluated. On paper, the squad currently includes five senior centre-backs: Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Matthjis de Ligt, and Leny Yoro.”

Despite the apparent depth, Sully pointed out potential concerns: “One could argue that Martinez and Maguire have recurring injury problems and de Ligt is still undergoing rehabilitation. Therefore, adding another centre-back might become necessary, but as things stand, other areas are of greater importance.”

He added, “Names will continue to be reviewed, but whether the club will actively pursue a signing in that role remains uncertain given the pressing needs elsewhere.”

Considering the number of positions Manchester United aim to strengthen, it will be challenging for the club to address every issue within a single transfer window.

Ultimately, much of United’s defensive planning will depend heavily on how well Matthjis de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez can maintain their fitness over the upcoming season.
