Arsenal are poised for a significant summer financial boost as former academy graduate Folarin Balogun edges closer to a major move away from AS Monaco.
The North London club had cleverly included a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause when they transferred the striker to the Ligue 1 outfit in 2023. That astute piece of business, orchestrated by former sporting director Edu Gaspar, now looks set to yield substantial rewards.
Balogun, aged 24, is widely expected to leave France this summer after an impressive spell of performances. His market value has soared thanks to his outstanding displays for both Monaco and the United States Men’s National Team, highlighted by a dazzling two-goal showing against Paraguay at the World Cup.
Monaco, responding quickly to intense international interest, have placed a firm €50 million (£43.2 million) valuation on the forward. Importantly for Arsenal, their sell-on clause applies to the full future transfer fee rather than solely the profit margin. If Monaco’s asking price is met, Arsenal would stand to receive around £7.56 million (€8.75 million) straight into Mikel Arteta’s summer transfer budget.
A fierce competition among top European clubs is already underway for the striker’s signature. While a return to the Emirates Stadium is off the table, a Premier League comeback remains a strong possibility. Several English sides are closely tracking developments, attracted by Balogun’s valuable ‘homegrown’ status. At the same time, Serie A powerhouses from Milan and Rome are also reportedly preparing bids to challenge the English interest.
With Balogun showing no interest in extending his contract in France, Monaco appear ready to sell while his value is at its peak. For Arsenal and Edu’s successor Andrea Berta, this timely multimillion-pound boost comes at an ideal juncture. As Arteta works to fine-tune his squad ahead of another demanding domestic and European season, Edu’s strategic planning continues to ensure that even past player exits contribute directly to Arsenal’s pursuit of future trophies.
