Toronto – Luka Modrić marked a historic milestone as he earned his 200th international appearance, leading Croatia to a narrow 1–0 victory over Panama in their FIFA World Cup group match in Toronto.
The decisive moment came in the 54th minute when substitute Ante Budimir finished off a well-worked move involving Josip Stanišić and Marco Pašalić, turning in a low cross with his left foot. The goal sparked celebrations among Croatia’s travelling supporters in a packed stadium.
The win was crucial for Croatia after their opening 4–2 defeat to England, keeping their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive. Panama, meanwhile, were eliminated following a second straight loss in the group.
Before kick-off, thousands of Croatian fans created a vibrant atmosphere around the stadium, with red-and-white checkered shirts dominating the stands. Panama supporters also made their presence felt in the opposite end of the venue.
On the pitch, Panama came closest in the first half when José Luis Rodríguez struck the crossbar with a header, forcing a vital touch from Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković. At the other end, Panama keeper Orlando Mosquera produced a strong save to deny Martin Baturina just before half-time.
After the break, Croatia increased the pressure and eventually found the breakthrough through Budimir. Modrić continued to influence play, later setting up Marco Pašalić for another opportunity, which was again stopped by Mosquera.
Panama pushed for an equaliser late on, but Livaković delivered several key saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Modrić was substituted in the 82nd minute to a standing ovation, with teammate Marin Pongračić praising him as a “legend of Croatian football” and highlighting his leadership and impact on the squad.
Croatia now turn their attention to their final group match against Ghana, while Panama will face England.
