Cristiano Ronaldo had little interest in discussing his long-time rival Lionel Messi despite answering his critics with a vintage display at the 2026 World Cup. The Portuguese legend struck twice in his nation’s emphatic win over Uzbekistan, but it was an uneasy post-match moment that drew significant attention.

Ronaldo hits back at ‘very harsh’ critics

Following Portugal’s commanding 5-0 victory, the captain did not hold back when addressing the media, revealing that the build-up to the fixture had been clouded by negativity. After a disappointing goalless draw against DR Congo in their opener, the 41-year-old came under scrutiny, with many questioning whether his time at the top level was nearing its end.

“It was a very tough and difficult week, with public opinion being very harsh on all the players, especially on me and the coach [Roberto Martinez],” Ronaldo told reporters. “But I don’t mind. I’ve been in this profession for 23 years now, and whenever things go well, ‘Cristiano is doing great,’ but when they go badly, ‘Cristiano is retired, he’s too old.’ It will always be like that. But we responded well today.”

He went on to add: “The most important thing is the team, being united with them. We can’t control the rest that comes from outside. We know that when we don’t win, we get attacked, especially me.”

Ronaldo’s cold response to Messi comparisons

Despite a record-making night in Houston, where he became the first footballer to score in six different World Cups, Ronaldo appeared irritated when questions turned to Messi. The Argentine forward has been in sparkling form with five goals in his initial matches, but Ronaldo made it abundantly clear that he isn’t keeping tabs on his rival’s numbers.

When asked about Messi’s goal total, the Al-Nassr striker retorted, “I couldn’t care less about others… [Kylian] Mbappe also scored.” He quickly dismissed further comparisons with Messi, Mbappe, and Erling Haaland by curtly saying, “Next question,” determined to shift the focus back to Portugal’s collective achievement.

Historic milestones reached in Houston

On the field, Ronaldo was clinical and composed, opening the scoring in the sixth minute with a sharp finish from a Joao Cancelo cross. He added a second before half-time after running onto a perfectly weighted Bruno Fernandes pass, demonstrating that his instinct for goals remains as sharp as ever.

His brace carried extra significance: at 41 years and 138 days, he became the oldest player ever to score two goals in a single World Cup match. The feat also saw him surpass the great Eusebio to become Portugal’s highest goal-scorer in World Cup history with 10 goals to his name.

Dream clash still on the horizon?

Though Ronaldo shut down direct comparisons with Messi, he did acknowledge that a potential knockout-round showdown between Portugal and Argentina would be something truly special. With both teams chasing top spots in their respective groups, a pathway exists for the two icons to face off on football’s grandest stage.

“I don’t know how to answer that. But, well, it would be awesome,” Ronaldo admitted when asked about the possibility of meeting Messi’s Argentina later in the competition. “The most important thing was today, winning to advance, and being ready for what’s next ... The main goal was to advance from the group stage, and we did it.”

For now, Ronaldo’s attention turns to Portugal’s final Group K fixture against Colombia in Miami, where another strong performance could secure them a favourable draw for the knockout rounds.
