Andre Onana appears to hold the decisive say in his potential transfer to Trabzonspor, according to recent reports.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper never quite managed to establish himself at Manchester United, and two seasons after his £47.2 million move from Inter Milan, the club agreed to send him out on loan last summer.
Onana joined Turkish Süper Lig outfit Trabzonspor, where he set out to rediscover his form. During his loan spell, he produced several strong performances, prompting many to question why he had struggled so much at Old Trafford.
Despite his improvement in Turkey, a return to Manchester United seems out of the question, given the outstanding form of his replacement, Senne Lammens.
Lammens, who was signed for £18.2 million last summer, has been a revelation in goal for the Red Devils. His impressive displays were so impactful that he was named the Premier League’s transfer of the season.
With 23-year-old Lammens firmly established as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, the club’s goalkeeping department looks well set for the foreseeable future. However, the club still faces the task of offloading both Altay Bayindir and Onana, with neither player having met the required standards.
Bayindir’s next destination remains uncertain, though there is interest from Turkish clubs. Onana, meanwhile, could find himself returning to Trabzonspor, where he concluded the season as something of a fan favourite.
According to a report from Sabah, “The Black Sea giants have made an offer to the Cameroonian goalkeeper, whom they had on loan from Manchester United last season.”
The report further states, “Trabzonspor are keen to finalise a decision before the end of their training camp and have already drawn up a Plan B should negotiations not go as planned.”
The alternative option being considered is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ goalkeeper José Sá, with initial discussions reportedly underway to explore a possible transfer.
With Onana holding the power to determine the outcome of this move, many hope he will agree to it and bring an end to what has been a difficult chapter of his career at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s new ownership group, INEOS, are thought to have no objections to his departure. Reports suggest they are already exploring options for an experienced backup goalkeeper, with Karl Darlow emerging as a potential candidate to support Lammens.
