David de Gea has reportedly made his intentions clear regarding his next move, informing those close to him that he would only consider leaving Fiorentina for a return to Manchester United. Although the Spanish goalkeeper has attracted renewed interest from major European clubs following his impressive resurgence in Italy, his heart appears to remain tied to Old Trafford.
For the Spanish star, it’s Manchester United or nothing. De Gea has rediscovered his form in Serie A, but reports from Tuttomercatoweb suggest that the experienced shot-stopper has made it clear he would only leave the Viola for one specific destination this summer.
That destination is a dramatic return to Manchester United, where he spent 12 years between 2011 and 2023. While several teams are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing the veteran keeper, his firm stance of “Old Trafford or nothing” looks set to define how the final stages of his career unfold.
Speculation has recently linked De Gea with Juventus, as the Turin-based giants continue their search for a reliable goalkeeper. The Serie A powerhouse is said to have listed the Spaniard among their potential targets, alongside Liverpool’s Alisson Becker and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
However, despite the allure of joining another Italian heavyweight, De Gea is not interested in moving to a domestic rival or another European league. His spell in Italy has been a productive one, featuring 88 appearances for Fiorentina, during which he kept 24 clean sheets and conceded 109 goals. His performances earned him a place in the Serie A Team of the Season for the 2024-25 campaign. Yet, as he approaches his 36th birthday in November, De Gea is reportedly prioritising emotional fulfilment and his long-standing connection with Manchester United over a potentially lucrative final transfer.
De Gea’s path back to prominence has been marked by perseverance and professionalism. After leaving Manchester United when his contract expired in June 2023, the Spaniard spent a year without a club. In the summer of 2024, Fiorentina offered him a route back into top-flight football as a free agent, and he seized the opportunity.
Since joining Fiorentina, De Gea has demonstrated that true quality never fades. He has consistently produced the kind of outstanding saves that once made him a Premier League icon. His performances have been crucial for Fiorentina during a difficult campaign, which saw the club finish 15th in Serie A, exit the Coppa Italia in the round of 16, and bow out of the UEFA Conference League at the quarter-final stage. His current contract runs until June 2028, with an option to extend it by another year, indicating that he is content in Florence—unless Manchester United come calling.
For now, though, a return to Old Trafford remains a dream rather than a reality. Manchester United have not given any official signal that they plan to bring back their former No. 1. During his illustrious first stint in Manchester, De Gea won one Premier League title, one FA Cup, two EFL Cups, three FA Community Shields, and one Europa League trophy, cementing his place among the club’s modern greats.
