Bayern Munich are reportedly on the brink of finalising a new contract extension with midfielder Konrad Laimer after overcoming financial differences between both parties. Honorary president Uli Hoeness has indicated that the agreement is virtually completed. The Austrian international, who has made 136 appearances for the club, is currently concentrating on his World Cup commitments in Group J, but Bayern remain confident that only his final signature is pending to make the deal official.

Hoeness reveals contract progress

After several months of detailed negotiations between Bayern Munich and Laimer, it now appears that both sides have reached an understanding. As per a report from Sport1, Hoeness inadvertently disclosed the positive development during a recent event in Upper Bavaria.

While discussing the lengthy discussions, Hoeness was quoted as saying that “in principle, only the signature is missing” for Laimer to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena. Initial rumours even suggested that Hoeness mentioned the contract had already been signed, though subsequent clarifications confirmed that a verbal agreement has been established. This progress brings immense relief to Bayern Munich, who have made consistent efforts to ensure Laimer remains part of their long-term plans.

Impressive career across German football

Since joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer from RB Leipzig in 2023, Laimer has become a crucial figure in the squad. Before his move, he featured in 190 matches for Leipzig, scoring 15 goals. For Bayern, he has already registered 136 appearances and scored seven times, underlining his importance to the team.

During the previous season, Laimer’s influence was evident, as he played 47 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and 13 assists over 3,297 minutes. His list of achievements includes two Bundesliga titles and three German Cup triumphs, highlighting his consistent success in domestic competitions.

Focus shifts to World Cup qualification

Although his club future is nearly settled, Laimer’s immediate focus is on international duty with Austria. The midfielder has earned 59 caps and scored seven goals for his national team. Austria are currently navigating a tough World Cup campaign in Group J. Following a crucial 3-1 win over Jordan but a 2-0 loss to Argentina, they now face a decisive final group match against Algeria. Laimer and his teammates must secure a victory to confirm their qualification as runners-up in the group.

Next steps for Bayern and Laimer

Once Austria’s World Cup journey concludes, Laimer is expected to return to Germany to sign the official documents. Bayern Munich are anticipated to make a formal announcement shortly after his return. With his contract situation resolved and having recently been honoured as the 2025 Austrian Footballer of the Year, Laimer can now fully concentrate on adding more silverware to his collection with both club and country.
