On June 25, Caracas experienced two significant earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, resulting in at least 32 fatalities and approximately 700 injuries. The tremors caused extensive destruction, prompting emergency rescue efforts.

The earthquakes wreaked havoc along the Venezuelan coastline, causing buildings to collapse and sending terrified residents fleeing into the streets. The tremors were felt as far away as Brazil's Amazon region, nearly 1,700 kilometers from the epicenter.

The country's primary aviation hub, Simón Bolívar International Airport, sustained significant damage, leading to the suspension of all operations. Additionally, schools and educational institutions have been ordered to close for several days.

Acting President Rodriguez indicated that the death toll may increase as rescue operations continue in the most affected areas. La Guaira was reported as the hardest-hit state.

"Numerous buildings have collapsed, and we are engaged in the challenging task of saving lives. La Guaira is facing a true tragedy and has become a disaster zone," Rodriguez stated.

"We urge our citizens to remain calm and united during this crisis," she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the devastation in Venezuela, offering India's assistance to the affected nation.

"I am deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela. On behalf of the Indian people, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and citizens of Venezuela, especially to those who have lost loved ones," Modi shared on social media.

The Prime Minister also expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured and solidarity with all affected individuals during this challenging time.

"India is prepared to provide all possible assistance," he affirmed.

Japan's Earthquake Update

In a separate incident, a powerful earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on Thursday, although authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the earthquake's magnitude as 7.2, revised from an initial estimate of 6.9. The epicenter was located off the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometers. The US Geological Survey recorded it at a magnitude of 6.9.

This tremor occurred in a region that has experienced several strong earthquakes recently, including one that led to a week-long megaquake advisory in December.

The earthquake hit during the morning rush hour in northeastern Japan and was also felt lightly in Tokyo. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated that there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi mentioned that the government's emergency response team is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to initiate relief operations if necessary.

"We prioritize the safety of our citizens while gathering information and preparing for any required response," she urged residents in affected areas to stay alert for potential aftershocks.

The East Japan Railway Company announced that several bullet train services and local rail lines in northeastern Japan were temporarily halted for safety inspections.
