The Government of India has given Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi the status equivalent to a Union Cabinet Minister in the Table of Presidency. According to the order of the Home Ministry, this status will be only for formal programs and no change has been made in the existing protocol system for this. This decision is being seen as an indication of the strategic importance India is giving to Bangladesh. The special thing is that this facility has been given only to Dinesh Trivedi personally.
In an office memorandum issued on June 24, 2026, the Home Ministry said that Dinesh Trivedi has been given the status equivalent to a Union Cabinet Minister in the Table of Presidency. However, it has been made clear in the order that this status will be limited only to formal programs and protocol related activities. Due to this, neither Dinesh Trivedi becomes the Union Minister nor has any permanent change been made in the Table of Presidency. The Home Ministry has also clarified that this facility has been given under “As a Major Personal to him”, i.e. it is applicable only to the present High Commissioner and is not permanently attached to the post.

In diplomatic matters, such special protocol status is often seen as an indication that the diplomat concerned enjoys the full confidence of the Prime Minister and the Government of India. According to the report, governments from time to time give special protocol status to their representatives posted in important countries. Bangladesh is a major neighboring country of India and is considered an important partner in South Asia. In such a situation, giving formal status equivalent to a cabinet minister to Dinesh Trivedi is being considered as an indication that New Delhi is currently giving special importance to its mission in Dhaka. This is not being seen as an administrative promotion but as a diplomatic message.
Dinesh Trivedi has recently taken charge as the new High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. With the beginning of his tenure, India has announced to again accept Indian tourist visa applications for Bangladeshi citizens from June 28, 2026. According to the High Commission of India, Dhaka, the medical visa facility will continue as before. For the past several months, India had limited visa services for Bangladesh and mainly medical and emergency category visas were being issued. Now the restoration of tourist visa is being seen as a step towards normalcy in the relations between the two countries. This also indicates that efforts are being intensified to streamline the movement of people between the two countries.
