Hospital: In a major boost to water infrastructure in southern India, 33 newly installed spillway gates at the Tungabhadra Dam were dedicated on Thursday in Karnataka.

The ceremony was attended by Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

The Tungabhadra Dam is a crucial water project for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It plays an important role in irrigation, drinking water supply, flood management and regional water distribution.

Major Steps For Dam Safety

The newly installed spillway gates are expected to improve the operational efficiency of the dam, especially during the monsoon season when water discharge management becomes critical.

The modernized gates will help regulate excess water more effectively and strengthen safety systems at the reservoir. The development is also significant for farmers who depend on Tungabhadra water for irrigation across large parts of the region.

Three-State Water Link

The presence of leaders from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana highlighted the inter-state importance of the Tungabhadra project. The dam has long served as a key water source for agricultural and drinking water needs across the Krishna basin.

Officials said the upgraded infrastructure will support better coordination in water release, storage and flood control. The project is also expected to help improve long-term reservoir management.

Focus On Irrigation And Flood Control

The dedication of the new gates comes ahead of the monsoon period, when reservoirs across the region require close monitoring. With the installation of the new spillway gates, authorities expect improved readiness for handling heavy inflows.

The event underlined the importance of strengthening aging water infrastructure and ensuring safer, more efficient management of major dams.
