WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature designed to help users protect themselves from potential scams and spam messages. The popular messaging platform now displays a warning screen when users attempt to start conversations with phone numbers that are not saved in their contacts or that they have never messaged before. This proactive measure gives users a moment to pause and verify the identity of the person trying to communicate with them before engaging further.

The warning feature is now available on both Android and iOS devices, bringing enhanced protection to WhatsApp’s global user base of over 2 billion people worldwide. The alert screen appears whenever someone tries to initiate a conversation with an unknown phone number, displaying important details about the contact including the phone number’s country of registration, whether it’s saved in the user’s contacts, and whether both parties share any WhatsApp groups in common. These details help users make informed decisions about whether to proceed with the conversation.

After seeing the warning, users can choose to either continue with the chat or cancel it entirely. The person sending the message receives no notification about whether the recipient decided to continue or cancel the conversation, maintaining privacy for everyone involved. This feature particularly addresses the growing problem of scammers targeting WhatsApp users by pretending to be acquaintances, friends, or family members the user doesn’t actually know.

WhatsApp’s security team identified that many users receive messages from people claiming to be acquaintances they don’t recognize, often leading to fraudulent attempts or spam. The warning gives users time to think and verify the contact’s identity before responding. Users should check the phone number’s country code, verify the name and profile photo (though WhatsApp doesn’t validate these), and be cautious of suspicious behavior like rushing, threatening language, or requests for personal or financial information.

If a user cannot verify who sent the message, they should pause and think before responding, stop the conversation immediately, and block and report the suspicious user. This warning feature complements other WhatsApp privacy tools like Silence Unknown Callers, Chat Lock for password-protected sensitive conversations, Disappearing Messages that vanish automatically, and the ability to block messages from unknown accounts that send high volumes of unsolicited messages.

The new security measure demonstrates WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to user safety while maintaining the platform’s core privacy and end-to-end encryption standards. As scammers increasingly target WhatsApp users with sophisticated schemes, this warning feature provides an important layer of protection that helps users identify potential threats before they engage with them.
