Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has reportedly made a firm decision about his future at Old Trafford, despite growing interest from the Saudi Pro League. Even with a lucrative release clause and the appeal of reuniting with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, the Portuguese midfielder has confirmed his commitment to the Red Devils for at least another season.
Fernandes confirms Old Trafford commitment
As per talkSPORT, Fernandes is expected to remain with Manchester United despite persistent rumours linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia. Although the midfielder did not hold formal discussions with the club about his future prior to the World Cup, he has already informed his teammates and close associates of his decision to stay in Manchester.
The 31-year-old remains an integral part of Manchester United’s long-term plans. While speculation over his next step continues, Fernandes appears content with his current situation. With one year left on his contract, plus an optional one-year extension available to the club, United’s hierarchy are comfortable with the scenario. His existing deal includes a €65 million (£56m) release clause applicable only to non-English clubs.
Saudi clubs continue to monitor his situation
Interest from Saudi Arabia is not new. Clubs such as Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ittihad all made enquiries last summer. Fernandes was notably tempted by Al-Hilal’s offer ahead of the 2025 Club World Cup but ultimately decided that staying at Old Trafford was the best move for both his footballing career and his family.
TalkSPORT further reports that Saudi interest remains strong, with Al-Nassr still eager to reunite Fernandes with his Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Adding intrigue to the speculation, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez is rumoured to be in discussions about potentially managing the Riyadh-based club after the World Cup.
From uncertainty to stability — Amorim’s role
Fernandes’ future was not always this secure. In a previous candid interview, he hinted that the United management might have been open to selling him. “The club wanted me to leave. I told the directors that; I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision because the manager wanted me. But if I had said I wanted to go, even though the manager wanted me to stay, the club would have allowed it,” Fernandes told Canal 11 earlier.
However, much has changed at Carrington since then. Former manager Ruben Amorim is believed to have played a key role in convincing Fernandes to remain, and current boss Michael Carrick is equally determined to keep his captain at the core of the team.
A record-setting leader
Since joining Manchester United from Sporting CP in January 2020, Bruno Fernandes has become one of the most influential players in the club’s modern era. He has scored 107 goals and provided 108 assists in 327 appearances. His performance levels remain exceptional; in the previous Premier League campaign, he notched 21 assists — setting a new single-season record that surpassed the mark previously held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes’ outstanding form has also translated to the international stage during the ongoing World Cup cycle. He registered his first goal contribution of the tournament by assisting Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal in Portugal’s commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan.
