Incidents of cyber fraud are constantly on the rise. To ensure speedy justice for victims and facilitate the recovery of defrauded funds, the Haryana Police has introduced a new system. Under this initiative, if an individual falls victim to cyber fraud involving ₹1 lakh or more, their complaint can be converted into an 'E-Zero FIR'. Details regarding this have been shared on the Haryana Police's official social media platform, 'X'. Let us understand what an E-Zero FIR is and the complete process associated with it:
What is an E-Zero FIR?
Typically, an FIR for any crime is registered at the police station where the incident occurred. However, a 'Zero FIR' differs; the victim can lodge a complaint at any police station, and the complaint is subsequently transferred to the appropriate police station. This system has now been digitized and moved online to ensure that legal action in cyber fraud cases can commence immediately without wasting time.
When is an E-Zero FIR automatically registered?
According to the Haryana Police, if a person is defrauded of ₹1 lakh or more in a cyber fraud incident and registers a complaint via the 1930 helpline, the complaint will automatically be converted into an E-Zero FIR. This enables the police to initiate action on the case immediately.
What happens after the complaint is lodged?
According to the Haryana Police:
If you have fallen victim to cyber fraud, first report it by calling the 1930 helpline number.
If the defrauded amount is ₹1 lakh or more, the complaint will automatically become an E-Zero FIR.
The case will then be forwarded to the cyber police station with jurisdiction over the area.
The Investigating Officer (IO) from the cyber police station will contact the victim to gather necessary details.
Once all required information is obtained, the E-Zero FIR will be converted into a regular FIR, and the investigation will proceed.
What are the benefits of this?
According to Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal, this system will facilitate the prompt registration of FIRs in cyber fraud cases, enable faster police action, ensure the timely preservation of digital evidence, increase the likelihood of recovering the defrauded amount, and assist in the swift apprehension of cybercriminals.
Therefore, if you fall victim to cyber fraud, immediately call 1930 to lodge a complaint or file one online at cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner you report the incident, the sooner the police can initiate action, thereby increasing the chances of recovering the lost funds.
