Meet Ismail Elfath – The Referee Overseeing Uruguay vs Spain Clash

The official in charge of tonight’s Uruguay versus Spain encounter is Ismail Elfath, a referee representing the United States.

If Uruguay manage to defeat Spain in Mexico, they will secure the top position in Group H and book a spot in the round of 32 in California. Importantly, that result would also help them avoid a potential clash with reigning world champions Argentina.

Both Uruguay and Spain are nations with rich histories of success at the global and continental levels. However, it would still be considered somewhat surprising if Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay side were to overtake Spain at this stage. The match referee may feel a sense of relief seeing Luis Suarez watching from the VIP area rather than playing on the field. But who exactly is this referee?

As things stand, no team in Group H has guaranteed qualification or suffered elimination, meaning everything is still to play for. The man appointed to officiate this crucial fixture is Ismail Elfath, a Moroccan-born American referee who works in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Elfath began his refereeing career in MLS in 2012 and was included in FIFA’s list of international referees in 2016.

The 41-year-old made his first appearance of this World Cup during the Netherlands’ 5-1 victory over Sweden in Group F. In that match, he booked three Swedish players – all of whom play in England’s Premier League.

Michael Oliver, another experienced referee, has officiated two FA Cup finals and a UEFA Super Cup, and is currently taking part in his fourth major international tournament since debuting at the European Championship in 2021.

Now aged 44, Elfath has been assigned numerous high-profile matches across CONCACAF competitions and FIFA tournaments.

His first World Cup experience came in 2022, where he took charge of two group-stage fixtures and one round-of-16 tie. He also served as the fourth official for the final in Qatar.

Elfath’s first assignment at the 2026 World Cup was the Group F clash between the Netherlands and Japan, where he issued yellow cards to three Dutch players but none to the Samurai Blue side.

With the 2026 MLS season currently paused for the World Cup, Elfath has officiated 10 matches so far this year, issuing 41 yellow cards, sending off three players, and awarding three penalties.

For those still deciding which Group F match to tune into, Elfath’s involvement might just add another layer of intrigue.

He will be supported by fellow American assistant referees Corey Park and Kyle Atkins, while Juan Gabriel Calderon from Costa Rica has been appointed as the fourth official.
