Tezzbuzz Desk- Amidst the increasing awareness of consumers regarding packed food, the food safety regulatory body Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has raised questions on the claims of a biscuit company. The matter pertains to claims like 100% flour, no added sugar and digestive, which are suspected to be giving misleading information.
Action taken after complaint, response sought from company
This action was initiated after a consumer complaint. FSSAI has sought documents and clarification from the concerned company in support of the claims made on its product. The organization says that if the reply is not given within the stipulated time, further legal action can be taken.
What difference was found on the ‘100% flour’ claim?
Investigation revealed that 100% flour was written on the company’s biscuit packets, whereas the actual flour content was found to be around 72.33%. Due to this difference, questions have been raised on the credibility of the claim.
‘No added sugar’ claim also under investigation
The report also revealed that ingredients like maltodextrin and glucose syrup are present in the product. On the same basis, clarification has also been sought regarding the claim of ‘No Added Sugar’ whether this claim is completely correct and clear to the consumer or not.
Demand for scientific evidence on the word ‘digestive’
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has also asked the company on what scientific basis the word ‘digestive’ has been used. The organization has asked to present solid scientific evidence and documents in support of this claim.
Emphasis on strict rules in consumer interest
FSSAI says that health or nutrition claims on any food product will be valid only if there is adequate scientific basis behind them. Its purpose is to protect consumers from false or misleading information.
Company has 7 days time, further action may be taken
The company has been given 7 days to respond to the notice. If a satisfactory response is not received, further legal action is possible under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
