Graham Potter has expressed his delight ahead of Sweden’s highly anticipated World Cup round-of-32 clash against powerhouse France in New Jersey. The Sweden head coach, formerly of Chelsea, acknowledged the enormity of the challenge posed by a star-studded French line-up but affirmed that his team are eager to attempt a major tournament upset.

Nordic underdogs through to knockouts

Sweden’s knockout encounter with the former world champions was confirmed after the completion of the group-stage fixtures. Potter’s team advanced to the last 32 as one of the best third-placed sides, collecting four points following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Japan in Dallas. In contrast, France cruised through their group with a perfect record, wrapping up their campaign with an emphatic 4-1 win over Norway.

Potter embraces the challenge

The ex-Premier League manager was full of admiration for the tactical quality and depth of the French national team. Speaking to the Swedish Football Association’s official website, Potter highlighted what it means emotionally to compete at football’s highest international level.

He said: “It’s going to be a fantastic match, the kind of occasion you dream about as a child. Facing France in a World Cup knockout game in New Jersey – it doesn’t get any bigger than that. They’re among the best teams in the world, and we have immense respect for them, but we’re really looking forward to it.”

French test awaits

Didier Deschamps’ men head into the knockout stage in superb form, having recorded four straight victories across all competitions, fuelled by the attacking brilliance of Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele. Despite recognising the quality of the French squad, Potter believes such challenges are part and parcel of competing deep into a World Cup.

Potter added: “They possess world-class talent across every position, they’ve already lifted the World Cup trophy, and their coach knows exactly how to win big games. It’s a massive challenge, but that’s what World Cup knockout football is all about.”

Massive hurdle ahead

Sweden will travel from their training base in Dallas to New Jersey in preparation for Tuesday’s decisive encounter. To have any chance of advancing, Potter’s defenders will need to deliver a disciplined performance to contain a French attack that has netted 17 goals in their last six matches. The upcoming battle marks a significant rise in difficulty for Sweden, leaving no room for mistakes as they chase an improbable spot in the next round.
