Yan Diomande opts for Paris Saint-Germain despite Manchester United and Liverpool interest

Manchester United are currently on the lookout for a natural left winger, as Michael Carrick’s squad lacks a specialist in that area.

Former head coach Ruben Amorim sold all of United’s traditional wingers when he implemented a wing-back system — a tactical shift that ultimately failed to deliver results.

After Amorim’s dismissal, Carrick took charge and performed impressively despite the clear imbalances within the team. His ability to adapt the squad was evident, with Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu successfully transformed into attacking wide players. Cunha, primarily a supporting striker, and Dorgu, who was initially brought in as a wing-back, both excelled under Carrick’s system.

Dorgu’s consistent performances were so strong that United even considered converting him permanently into a left winger, while shifting their recruitment focus toward a new left-back instead.

However, those plans have evolved, as INEOS have shifted attention back to recruiting natural wide attackers. Among the shortlisted names was Iliman Ndiaye, though Everton are reportedly doing everything they can to block United’s interest.

Another target, Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig, came under serious consideration — especially given that Christopher Vivell, now part of United’s recruitment structure, knows the player well from his time at Leipzig.

Yet, due to the high asking price, United chose not to engage in a financial bidding war. This allowed Liverpool to step forward as frontrunners, with a substantial offer that threatened to eclipse United’s pursuit.

However, according to The Athletic, the Ivorian star, who is currently impressing at the World Cup, has set his sights on joining Paris Saint-Germain instead.

“Yan Diomande has chosen Paris Saint-Germain as his next destination if he leaves RB Leipzig this summer,” the report stated.

“The Ivory Coast international, aged 19, believes in the vision of chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi and football advisor Luis Campos, according to sources close to The Athletic, and is eager to play under head coach Luis Enrique.”

“The winger views a move to Paris as the best opportunity to challenge for major trophies consistently and to pursue his ambition of one day winning the Ballon d’Or.”

No transfer fee has been finalised yet, but it is understood that Liverpool’s €100 million offer was rejected, with Leipzig valuing the youngster at around €130 million.

With PSG now leading the race, the French champions appear poised to secure the 19-year-old’s signature. For Manchester United, this means returning to the drawing board to reassess their options on the left flank.

West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville remains a possible target, though any move is likely to depend on the future of Marcus Rashford.
