Manchester United remain determined in their efforts to sign Mateus Fernandes, despite growing competition for his signature.

Initially, United officials viewed Fernandes as a smart market opportunity, particularly after West Ham United’s relegation, which raised hopes that the club might part with their talented midfielder for a reasonable transfer fee.

However, Tottenham Hotspur’s readiness to meet a higher asking price has strengthened West Ham’s stance, allowing them to maintain their £85 million valuation for the player.

Currently, both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly attempting to gain an upper hand in their negotiations with the Championship side by persuading the player’s representatives.

According to reports from Claret & Hugh, both clubs have already reached an agreement on personal terms with Mateus Fernandes.

It is noted that Fernandes previously earned £20,000 a week at Southampton before signing a contract worth £60,000 per week, plus an additional £15,000 in bonuses, with West Ham United last year.

Now, both Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be offering wages in the range of £130,000 to £140,000 per week. These lucrative offers have reportedly “turned the player’s head.”

As a result, the 21-year-old midfielder is expected to leave the London Stadium this summer, despite having four years remaining on his current deal.

While United have made an impressive financial offer to Fernandes, they remain unwilling to meet West Ham United’s full valuation.

talkSPORT journalist Ben Jacobs explained: “Manchester United are still in formal discussions with West Ham, and my understanding is that both United and Spurs are waiting for some indication from the player that he prefers one club over the other. That would give them more leverage to negotiate with West Ham United.”

Meanwhile, INEOS are believed to be preparing a backup plan in case they fail to secure their main target.

Earlier reports indicated that United view West Ham’s asking price as excessive. The club have reportedly held discussions with the representatives of Bournemouth’s dynamic midfielder Alex Scott, as they believe a deal under £80 million could be reached with the Cherries for the English youngster.

Time is running short for both Manchester United and Mateus Fernandes, and one party will need to make a decisive move to complete the transfer to Old Trafford. INEOS are hopeful that their project and substantial offer will be enough to persuade the Portuguese midfielder to push West Ham United into lowering their financial demands.
