Canada’s clash with South Africa sees one of the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosts attempting to carve out a historic moment on North American soil.

While this Round of 16 encounter might not be the most glamorous knockout tie of the 2026 World Cup, it promises to be one of the most unpredictable.

Jesse Marsch’s men impressed with a commanding 6-0 triumph over Qatar in the group stage but faltered in their other two fixtures, settling for draws.

South Africa, meanwhile, managed just one win from their three group-stage matches, following a deflating opening defeat to Mexico that could have derailed their campaign.

Few would have imagined, after the first round of fixtures, that South Africa would be in contention for a Round of 16 berth. At that stage, the idea of them progressing might have drawn laughter from even their own supporters.

Yet, after an impressive turnaround in their subsequent games, drawing Canada as their next opponent seems almost ideal — the kind of fixture they would have hoped for heading into the knockout rounds.

Among the three host nations — the USA, Mexico, and Canada — the Canadians have undoubtedly looked the weakest so far in the tournament.

They narrowly lost to Switzerland in their final group match and struggled to find a breakthrough against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening fixture. Their only victory, the dominant win over Qatar, appeared more symbolic of home support and determination than evidence of true quality.

In contrast, South Africa demonstrated considerable resilience, grinding out results against two formidable opponents in South Korea and Czechia. This came after a disastrous start against Mexico, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat and had two players sent off.

That opening loss could easily have defined South Africa’s tournament, but instead, they recovered admirably, showing character and composure in their remaining matches.

With the USA and Mexico already looking secure in their progression, the question remains — can all three co-hosts advance to the Round of 16?

For Canada, the task is formidable but not impossible. South Africa are a beatable side if Marsch’s men can perform at their peak and handle the pressure of expectation.

Neither side boasts a rich World Cup pedigree: Canada recorded their first-ever World Cup victory only in this edition, while South Africa have never previously advanced beyond the group stage.

This contest is set to be tight and hard-fought, but the South Africans come into the fixture with slightly better momentum. Having overcome a brutal opening loss, they appear poised to edge out a narrow win.

Prediction: Canada 0-1 South Africa
