Jordan Henderson has acknowledged that “time flies” after the former Liverpool skipper etched his name in the history books during England’s World Cup triumph over Panama. The experienced midfielder became the first player in the history of the Three Lions to appear in four different World Cup tournaments.

A memorable milestone for the veteran

The 36-year-old reached this remarkable landmark when he came off the bench in the second half of England’s 2-0 victory against Panama at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. The win ensured that Thomas Tuchel’s side finished top of Group L, setting up a Round of 32 encounter against DR Congo.

Currently playing for Brentford, Henderson picked up his 91st international cap in the process. Beyond his World Cup achievement, he also became the first English footballer to feature in seven major international competitions, surpassing generations of legendary players who donned the iconic white shirt before him.

Looking back on an extraordinary career

Despite the rise of younger talents, the former Liverpool captain continues to be a reliable figure in the squad. Speaking to ITV after the match, Henderson reflected on his long journey and enduring passion for representing England.

“Time flies, doesn’t it,” he said. “It’s crazy really. I’ve always said how honoured I am to represent my country ever since I made my debut. To still be able to do it now is a dream come true, and to get on and still run around like a little kid when I got some minutes means just as much now as when I earned my first cap. All I’ve ever tried to do is give my best for my country, my team-mates, and make the nation proud.”

Securing the top spot in Group L

While Henderson’s personal record grabbed headlines, the result was equally vital for England’s campaign. Goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane sealed the win over a resilient Panama side that posed a threat on the counter-attack. The Three Lions completed a strong group stage, setting themselves up perfectly for the knockout rounds.

Speaking about the team’s performance, Henderson expressed satisfaction with the professionalism of the display. “It’s a nice feeling to win the group, win the game today, and keep another clean sheet which is important,” he added. “I think we will [have more control] and we just need to make sure that when that happens again, we make better decisions. Controlling games, which we’ve done really well, especially in the Ghana game, we just need to carry that forward.”

Looking ahead to the knockout rounds

As England prepare for their Round of 32 clash with DR Congo, Henderson believes the squad is in an excellent position to challenge for the biggest prize in world football. The midfielder praised the standards being maintained within the team’s camp and insisted that there is still more to come from Tuchel’s talented group.

“There will be loads of areas we want to tweak, improve on and get better,” Henderson explained. “I’m still confident the lads are in a great spot, and training has been excellent as well. It’s a good feeling around the camp and we just need to keep pushing everything.”
