Manchester United are actively pursuing reinforcements for their midfield ahead of the upcoming season.

The club has already settled on a transfer fee with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. The agreement is expected to be finalised once Brazil conclude their World Cup campaign.

The Red Devils have also been engaged in discussions with West Ham United for Portuguese youngster Mateus Fernandes, though no deal has yet been reached.

In addition, United are reportedly monitoring Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, whose long-term future in Spain appears increasingly uncertain.

At the same time, the Old Trafford outfit are said to be considering more economical and youthful options in midfield. Among the most persistent names linked with the club is Northern Ireland international Shea Charles.

Michael Carrick’s side are believed to be interested in the 22-year-old, but they are not alone in the chase for his signature.

Leeds United have also been pursuing the midfielder and are understood to have had a bid rejected earlier this month.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Leeds have seen two offers turned down, with Southampton holding out for a figure close to £30 million before agreeing to part ways with Charles.

Interestingly, United’s connection to Charles extends beyond a simple transfer interest.

The Mail further reported that “Southampton have also had interest from Atalanta,” who are seeking a replacement for Ederson — the only confirmed signing for Manchester United so far this summer.

The dynamic midfielder featured 44 times for Southampton across all competitions last season, finding the net six times.

One of those goals notably eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Despite his youth, Charles has already earned 35 caps for Northern Ireland and delivered a particularly impressive performance against World Cup favourites France in a pre-tournament friendly, showcasing his growing potential on the international stage.
