Maserati, once celebrated for crafting some of the most elegant sedans on the planet, has moved away from traditional four-door cars in recent years. Its current lineup is dominated by sports cars, GranTurismos, and SUVs. However, the Italian marque insists that its sedan heritage is far from finished. During a conference call discussing the updated GranTurismo and Grecale models, Maserati’s chief operating officer, Santo Ficili, confirmed that there is still “space for a sort of sedan” within the brand’s portfolio.
The final year Maserati offered a true sedan was 2023, when production of both the Quattroporte and the Ghibli came to an end. Yet, according to Ficili, the next generation of Maserati sedans will not simply replicate the past but instead reinterpret it for modern needs.
“The world is full of SUVs, but the modern definition of a sedan can evolve,” Ficili explained. “I believe there is room for a kind of sedan that’s slightly more capable than before, yet still retains that aggressive character. The term ‘Quattroporte’ itself suggests something new—because there’s a gap that remains between SUVs and sedans. I believe Maserati can create the right car to bridge that divide.”
While Ficili stopped short of confirming specific details, his comments suggest that Maserati’s next four-door may blend sedan proportions with crossover practicality—possibly featuring a higher stance or versatility akin to a rugged touring car. And it could arrive sooner than expected, hinted Maserati’s chief marketing officer, Cristiano Fiorio.
“We are currently absent in the E-segment, which includes the legacy of our Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans. In this direction, we are developing a new model because there is clear demand from our customers,” Fiorio revealed.
It’s hardly a surprise that long-time Maserati enthusiasts are eager for a return to form. The Ghibli and Quattroporte earned admiration for their comfort and their distinct exhaust notes, even if they were occasionally criticized for reliability issues. Moreover, Maserati already possesses the technology to make a compelling new entry—the brand’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo Nettuno V6 engine delivers impressive performance and adaptability across multiple models. Whatever shape Maserati’s next four-door creation takes, it’s bound to spark excitement among fans and motoring purists alike.
