The highly anticipated World Cup Round of 32 encounter between Mexico and Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City was delayed on Tuesday night due to severe weather conditions. Originally set to kick off at 9:00 pm local time, the match eventually began an hour later at 10:00 pm following a safety delay prompted by thunderstorms in the region.

The fixture carried major significance for both nations, as they were vying for a place in the Last 16. For Ecuador, a victory would have marked only their second-ever progression to this stage in World Cup history.

The Estadio Azteca, one of the host venues for the 2026 World Cup, was heavily affected by a thunderstorm that disrupted FIFA’s scheduling plans. According to reports, lightning activity and heavy rain in the vicinity made it unsafe for players and spectators alike, forcing officials to delay proceedings.

Further complicating matters, Ecuador had lodged a formal complaint with FIFA earlier in the day, alleging that Mexican supporters had attempted to disturb their team’s preparation by setting off fireworks and honking car horns outside their team hotel overnight. The complaint referred to these actions as 'sleep deprivation tactics' intended to unsettle the Ecuadorian players before the crucial match.

Eyewitnesses described the weather as intense, with lightning flashes visible above the stadium and loud thunderclaps echoing across Mexico City. In some instances, the thunder drew audible reactions from fans inside the venue. As per reports, players did not leave their dressing rooms to warm up until nearly 40 minutes after the originally planned start time.

According to safety regulations observed in World Cup tournaments, play cannot begin or continue when lightning is detected within an eight-mile (approximately 13 km) radius of the stadium. Matches are paused for at least 30 minutes after the last observed lightning strike, and any new strike restarts the countdown to ensure player and spectator safety.

The Guardian reported that the delay was caused by a 'biblical thunderstorm' that persisted above the stadium for more than an hour. Once conditions improved, match officials confirmed it was safe to resume, and the game eventually kicked off under calmer conditions, though still amid a charged atmosphere both on and off the pitch.
