England’s Potential Path to the World Cup Final After Facing DR Congo

England’s quest to end six decades of World Cup disappointment intensifies as they prepare to take on DR Congo in their first knockout-stage encounter of the tournament.

The Three Lions secured the top spot in Group L, setting up a round of 32 clash on Wednesday. Their group campaign included a solid victory over Croatia, a goalless draw with Ghana, and a comfortable win against Panama.

Should England overcome the challenge of the African side, they will meet co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 at the iconic Estadio Azteca — a venue known for its high altitude and electric atmosphere. Mexico impressed with a commanding 2-0 victory against Ecuador on Tuesday and will be eager to topple one of the tournament’s leading contenders.

If Gareth Southgate’s men manage to pass that stern test, a potential quarter-final showdown with Brazil looms, based on current FIFA rankings. The Selecao, however, must first halt Erling Haaland’s prolific Norway side to secure their own progression to the last eight.

Assuming the expected results continue, England could then face Argentina in the semi-finals. Lionel Messi has inspired the defending champions to a flawless group stage, and they now face the tournament’s surprise package, Cape Verde, in the round of 32. The small island nation would need to pull off a monumental upset to eliminate the holders. Egypt or Australia await Argentina in the last 16, followed by a possible quarter-final against one of Switzerland, Algeria, Colombia, or Ghana.

If England manage to reach the final, they could meet world number one Spain. La Roja, though, have their own tough route ahead. They begin the knockouts against Austria and are likely to face Portugal in the last 16. A potential quarter-final against co-hosts USA could follow, before an anticipated semi-final clash with France — a fixture many see as a de facto final between two of the world’s best teams.
