Chelsea have confirmed the £47 million signing of Italian international defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta, marking the first major addition under new head coach Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old becomes a key part of Chelsea’s rebuild following a challenging campaign in the Premier League.

Alonso’s first signing as manager

Xabi Alonso’s tenure at Chelsea begins with a significant statement, as the club finalised the acquisition of Palestra shortly after the Spaniard’s arrival in west London. The move highlights the club hierarchy’s determination to support Alonso’s tactical vision by investing in top young talent.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the total fee exceeds £43 million and could rise to around £47 million with performance-related add-ons. Romano also confirmed that Palestra has signed a six-year deal with an option for a seventh year. The young defender joins the Blues after an outstanding season in Serie A and will link up immediately with the squad for pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Chelsea beat Inter to his signature

The Blues’ successful pursuit of Palestra represents a major coup in the transfer market, as they managed to fend off strong competition from Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri were initially favourites to sign the highly rated defender, but Chelsea’s late and decisive move turned the tide in their favour.

Palestra, who earned the Serie A Defender of the Year award following an impressive loan spell with Cagliari, expressed his excitement after completing the move. “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” he told the club’s official website. “I’m very excited to start. I’ve felt the energy and ambition from the first day Chelsea approached me. I can’t wait to meet the fans, my teammates, and the manager.”

Italian flair and versatility at Stamford Bridge

Known for his tactical awareness and adaptability, Palestra can play as either a traditional full-back or wing-back on both sides of defence. He featured in 37 Serie A matches for Cagliari last season, impressing with his defensive solidity and attacking drive, which drew attention from top European scouts. The youngster also made his senior debut for Italy earlier this year and has already earned two international caps for the Azzurri.

Palestra revealed that working under Alonso was a major factor in his decision to join the club. “We have so many talented players here and a strong manager in Xabi,” he said in his first interview as a Chelsea player. “He’s explained how he wants us to play, which is very exciting, and we’re eager to compete in the Premier League.”

A busy transfer window ahead for Chelsea?

Palestra’s arrival is expected to spark further transfer activity at Cobham, as Chelsea aim to return to the Champions League under Alonso. With the Italian defender set to join pre-season training, the club continues to explore additional signings, including reported interest in Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka and Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria.
