Sebastian Beccacece has officially resigned as Ecuador’s head coach following their elimination in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup after a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico. The Argentine coach confirmed his decision to step down immediately after the final whistle at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night.
Contract concludes with World Cup exit
Ecuador’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup came to an end in the Round of 32, marking the conclusion of Beccacece’s tenure. The coach confirmed that his contract with the Ecuadorian Football Federation expired with the team’s exit from the tournament. Although Ecuador delivered an inspired campaign that included a memorable victory over Germany, Beccacece admitted he could not stay on after failing to achieve the objectives he had set for himself and the team.
Speaking to reporters after the loss to Mexico, Beccacece explained his decision openly. “Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don’t think we were able to achieve the feat we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it’s my turn to say goodbye,” he said.
Mixed emotions for the departing coach
Beccacece admitted that stepping away was an emotional decision, especially given the strong bond he had built with his players and the federation. While he expressed his desire to continue working with the current group, he felt obliged to step aside after the team’s failure to reach the Round of 16.
“That’s why I have to leave. I would have liked to continue because what I received from the players and the management warranted the possibility of continuing. But I understand how this works and it hurts, but I think the decision was clear,” he explained.
Struggles against dynamic Mexico
Reflecting on the match, Beccacece acknowledged that Ecuador struggled to handle the intensity and energy of the co-hosts. Mexico began the game with high tempo and confidence, buoyed by a passionate home crowd, leaving Ecuador under pressure from the start. Despite an improved second-half performance, Ecuador failed to penetrate Mexico’s well-organised defensive line.
“We were outplayed in the first half,” Beccacece admitted. “We fought back, but we couldn’t find the goal that would have given us a boost.”
A legacy built on youth and gratitude
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Beccacece reflected positively on his contribution to Ecuadorian football. He highlighted the youthful nature of his squad as one of the key achievements during his time in charge and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the players, staff, and supporters.
“The legacy is from the players, because they have been the youngest team of Ecuador,” he said when asked about his impact. “I have no complaints, only gratitude to the people and the players. I received so much gratitude and affection from the bottom of my heart. The boys gave me two beautiful hours after the match and that’s what we’re left with.”
