New Delhi: Novak Djokovic moved another step closer to Wimbledon history after battling past Arthur Rinderknech to reach the fourth round and equal Roger Federer’s record for the most men’s singles match wins at the Championships with great diving volley on match point.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion had to work hard against the powerful Frenchman before sealing a 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) victory on Centre Court. The result was Djokovic’s 105th singles win at Wimbledon, drawing level with Federer at the top of the men’s all-time list. Only Martina Navratilova has won more singles matches at the All England Club.

Speaking after the match, Djokovic admitted it was far from his best performance but was pleased to find a way through. “To be able to make history in this sport is a huge honour and a huge privilege,” Djokovic said.

“Particularly here, it’s always been a dream childhood tournament of mine. I’m not thinking about whether it’s going to be 105 or 106, but I’m just thinking about trying to win that match on a given day,” the 24-time Grand Slam champion said.

Djokovic holds firm as Safiullin awaits

Rinderknech tested Djokovic throughout the contest with his aggressive serving and attacking game. After dropping the third set, the Serbian had to dig deep before producing a composed tie-break to wrap up victory after just over three hours.

“A bit of luck, a bit of skill, in the end,” Djokovic said. “It was pretty much a flawless tie-break from my side. Sometimes you just have to find a way to win and I’m happy I did that today.”

Djokovic will now face qualifier Roman Safiullin in the fourth round after the Russian produced one of the surprises of the tournament by defeating Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca in straight sets.

Sinner finds another gear, Medvedev crashes out early

Defending champion Jannik Sinner also booked his place in the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Jenson Brooksby. Although the Italian was not at his dominant best and made a number of unforced errors but managed to control the important moments to record another solid win and continue his title defence.

“I am very happy about the win,” Sinner said after the match. He added, “I am trying to improve every day. A small step forward today and I am trying to get better if I want to get further in this tournament.”

Sinner will now next take on Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, who has impressed with his run to the last 16.

The biggest upset of the day came when Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff knocked out Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. Struff won 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-5 to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time in his career.

The defeat ends another disappointing Grand Slam campaign for Medvedev, who has now failed to progress beyond the fourth round in each of his last seven major tournaments.

With Djokovic chasing another Wimbledon title and Sinner steadily building momentum, the battle for the men’s crown is beginning to take shape as the tournament heads into its second week.
