Georgia Stanway has officially joined Arsenal, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer transfer window following her departure from Bayern Munich. The England international had already announced in January that she would be leaving the German champions at the end of the season, and her move to the Gunners has now been confirmed after months of anticipation.

Stanway’s signing was unveiled on Friday, with the 27-year-old England midfielder set to wear the No.4 shirt in North London. Expressing her excitement, Stanway said, “It’s an unbelievable feeling and I’m so proud to be joining Arsenal. This is a massive club that is driving the women’s game forward to new levels and I want to be a part of it. I want to win trophies and grow as a player, and this is the right place to do that with the backing of an incredible fanbase.”

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers shared her delight about the signing, stating, “Georgia is a brilliant midfielder and we’re thrilled that she is an Arsenal player. She will add a new dimension to our midfield, bringing experience and reinforcing our winning mentality. We look forward to working with her during pre-season as we prepare for a big campaign ahead.”

Although Arsenal have not disclosed the duration of Stanway’s contract, reports from Arseblog suggest it is a three-year deal with an option for an additional year.

Stanway’s move marks her return to English football after four successful years in Germany, where she achieved both team and personal milestones. During her time at Bayern Munich, she won eight trophies, including four consecutive Bundesliga titles and two domestic trebles. She also helped the team reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals this year — their best performance in the competition in five seasons.

Her tenure in Germany also saw a significant resurgence in her career. After feeling that her development had stalled at Manchester City, where she spent seven years, Stanway made the bold decision to move to Bayern in 2022. The switch proved pivotal, as she revitalised her form and established herself as one of the world’s top midfielders. Her performances for both Bayern and the England national team during that period were outstanding — she played a key role in England’s back-to-back European Championship triumphs and their run to the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. Her efforts were recognised with a first-ever Ballon d’Or nomination following the tournament, underscoring her growing influence in the sport.

Stanway’s arrival at Arsenal addresses a key area of need within the squad. Her versatility, particularly in deeper midfield roles, will be invaluable for a team that has recently been overly dependent on Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey. Last season, the absence of Kyra Cooney-Cross for certain periods further exposed this reliance. Stanway’s addition brings balance and depth, while the reported imminent signing of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Geraldine Reuteler is expected to further strengthen the midfield options as Arsenal aim to capture their first Women’s Super League title in eight years during the 2026–27 season.

Stanway’s signing could be the start of a significant summer rebuild for Arsenal. Alongside Reuteler, the Gunners are reportedly pursuing several other high-profile targets, including former Barcelona full-back Ona Batlle, regarded as one of the best in her position globally. Furthermore, reports suggest that the club is working on deals for Germany international forward Selina Cerci — the Frauen-Bundesliga’s top scorer over the past two years — and 19-year-old winger Lisa Baum, for whom RB Leipzig are said to be demanding a substantial transfer fee.

With several senior players — including Katie McCabe, Beth Mead, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina, and Manuela Zinsberger — departing upon the expiry of their contracts last month, Arsenal face a transformative summer. The club’s recruitment drive aims to rebuild and strengthen the squad as they look to reclaim the Women’s Super League crown for the first time since 2019.
