Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly prepared to ‘reluctantly allow’ Lucas Bergvall to leave the club this summer, according to insider Pete O’Rourke, just days after the midfielder was told he would not be sold.
The North London side have been very active in the ongoing transfer window. They recently completed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a staggering £85 million and are now finalising a £100 million deal to bring Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
Those two additions are expected to significantly strengthen Tottenham’s midfield, but the situation has created uncertainty around one of their brightest young prospects, Lucas Bergvall, who is keen to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The Swedish midfielder has expressed his wish to leave, believing that his path into Roberto De Zerbi’s first team is blocked. Bergvall started just one of the seven matches after De Zerbi took charge last season, and the club’s new high-profile signings will likely make it even more difficult for him to secure regular playing time.
Although earlier reports indicated that Tottenham had assured Bergvall he would not be sold, O’Rourke now claims that the club is open to offers for the player.
Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke said: “Bergvall himself has indicated that he would like to leave Tottenham this summer for a new challenge.
“Tottenham reluctantly would allow him to move on for the right offer, and they’ve obviously spent big in midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes on the verge of joining the club as well, so that would likely push Lucas Bergvall down the pecking order.
“With this significant transfer expenditure, Spurs will need to balance their finances, so selling someone like Bergvall—on whom they can make a healthy profit after signing him from Sweden—could be a smart move.”
This stance contrasts sharply with previous reports suggesting that Bergvall had been assured of his place in the squad for the upcoming season.
Insider Michael Bridge has suggested that both narratives may be accurate — that Bergvall has been told he is not leaving, yet Tottenham would still consider attractive offers for him.
Bridge noted: “Understand Lucas Bergvall has been told he’s not leaving Spurs.
“The 20-year-old midfielder had made the club aware of his desire to move on in search of a fresh start due to concerns over his first-team involvement.
“Nottingham Forest are one of the clubs that have a strong interest in the Sweden international, who has five years remaining on his contract.”
He added: “Worth adding (my opinion) if Spurs received a large offer for Bergvall, they’d surely consider it. De Zerbi likes the player. Let’s see.”
Despite De Zerbi’s apparent admiration for Bergvall, his team selections so far suggest otherwise — the midfielder has played only 113 minutes under the Italian manager and was left unused in two matches.
Uncertainty continues to surround the player’s future, but it has been reported previously that Tottenham would consider selling him for around £45 million.
