Kylian Mbappe has strongly criticised Paraguay’s overly physical style of play, asserting that France are more than capable of matching aggression when required, after their hard-fought 1-0 victory in the World Cup round of 16. The Real Madrid-bound forward brushed off the South American side’s provocations with a grin before calmly converting a second-half penalty that sealed France’s place in the quarter-finals against Morocco.

Mbappe sends warning to World Cup contenders

Mbappe once again proved to be the difference-maker for Les Bleus, enduring sweltering conditions in Philadelphia to score his seventh goal of the tournament. His 70th-minute spot-kick proved decisive, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. Despite the oppressive heat and relentless physical pressure, the French captain maintained his composure, later remarking that teams expecting an easy contest against the 2018 champions will be disappointed.

“We knew what kind of match we were going to have,” Mbappe said. “We can also get our hands dirty, we know how to do it. We know how to play ugly football. Guess they were thinking we were going to show up in tuxedos, but we were ready.”

Tempers flare in Philadelphia heat

The game took place under extreme heat warnings, with temperatures soaring to 100 degrees, and the on-field intensity matched the conditions. Paraguay’s defensive tactics revolved around persistent fouling and constant verbal exchanges, sparking repeated clashes between Mbappe and Matias Galarza.

The hostility carried on after the final whistle, with tempers boiling over in the centre circle. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill even threw the ball at Mbappe’s back during the post-match altercation. “I tried to shake his hand, but since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper,” Gill later admitted, summing up the frustration within the Paraguayan camp.

France prepared for ‘battle’ in the knockout rounds

Substitute Rayan Cherki echoed Mbappe’s comments about the team’s mental toughness. The young midfielder highlighted that while France are often admired for their skill and creativity, they also possess a rugged determination that gives them an edge in knockout football. The gritty win further cements France’s reputation as favourites as the tournament enters its decisive stage.

“We knew that today, we would show our technical and tactical abilities less,” Cherki said. “We reminded everyone that the France team is not just about football. If you go to war with us, this is the response you can expect.”

Deschamps praises composure amid ‘gamesmanship’

France manager Didier Deschamps was quick to applaud his players for maintaining their discipline against a side he accused of resorting to “every trick in the book.” While France had scored 13 goals in their previous four matches, this narrow win demonstrated their maturity and ability to handle adversity.

“It wasn’t easy. If we’d taken one of our chances late in the game, it would have been a much more comfortable finish,” Deschamps said. “Paraguay use every trick in the book. It’s not necessarily the kind of football people enjoy watching, but we stayed focused, and that’s not easy to do.”

Defender William Saliba summed up the encounter succinctly, saying, “We fought a battle. We won the battle.”
