Barcelona and Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal has earned the nickname ‘Mini Messi’ after a stunning display at the 2026 World Cup that left Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes injured. The teenage winger’s brilliance was pivotal in helping Spain defeat their Iberian rivals and book a place in the quarter-finals.

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic was among those singing Yamal’s praises, hailing him as a ‘Mini Messi’ following Spain’s Round of 16 triumph. The ex-Serbia international was deeply impressed by the Barcelona youngster’s fearless performance on the right flank, which repeatedly unsettled the Portuguese defence.

Speaking to A Bola, Vidic said, “This boy is wonderful and truly special; he’s a ‘Mini Messi’ in my view – that’s what I call him. He made Nuno Mendes chase him down the wing several times with his dribbling tricks and, unfortunately, one of those runs caused Mendes’ injury.” The comparison to Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s all-time legend, is an immense compliment for the La Masia graduate, who continues to draw global attention with his creativity and composure.

The duel between Yamal and Mendes had been one of the tournament’s most anticipated battles, especially given the Paris Saint-Germain defender’s previous encounters with the Spanish prodigy. Yet, Yamal’s persistence and unpredictability eventually proved too much. Mendes struggled to contain the winger’s bursts of acceleration and intricate footwork, leading to a physical breakdown that altered the rhythm of the match.

In the 56th minute, Mendes was forced to leave the pitch, unable to continue after repeated challenges. Former Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo came on as his replacement, but by then Spain had seized control. La Roja maintained their defensive dominance, securing their sixth consecutive World Cup clean sheet to close out a well-deserved victory.

Vidic emphasised how Yamal’s style of play differs from the conventional patterns seen in modern football. He highlighted how the teenager’s constant changes of direction and unpredictable dribbles keep defenders off balance, making him a nightmare to mark. According to Vidic, this relentless pressure was the main reason behind Mendes’ injury.

“Lamine caused Mendes’ injury. That’s the kind of player he is,” Vidic remarked while analysing the highlights. “He doesn’t run in straight lines. He’s always moving with the ball, doing something unexpected and brilliant. Watching him play is pure joy.”

As Spain advance, their collective strength continues to shine alongside Yamal’s individual flair. The 2026 campaign, which began shakily with a draw against Cape Verde, has now transformed into a statement of intent as they chase a second world title.

With a quarter-final clash against Belgium approaching, Spain will rely heavily on the fitness and form of their teenage sensation. If Yamal maintains his current level, La Roja could well be on their way to the grand finale in North America on July 19.
