On Tuesday, it was officially announced that Rudi Völler will continue as Germany’s sporting director until the conclusion of his current contract in 2028, despite the national team’s disappointing elimination by Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32.
This confirmation followed discussions between the 66-year-old Völler and Jürgen Klopp, who is widely tipped to become the favourite candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as head coach of the German national team.
Appearing as a pundit on MagentaTV on Tuesday evening, Klopp spoke openly about his recent conversation with Völler.
“The situation is actually quite unusual because no final decision has been made yet. Still, certain conversations can happen regardless of how things eventually unfold. When I read that people were questioning whether Rudi Völler and I could work together if the opportunity arose, I felt it was important to talk to him directly and make clear that there would be absolutely no problem from my side,” Klopp stated.
The former Liverpool manager expressed that Völler’s vast experience would be a significant asset should he take over as Germany’s head coach.
“If it were to happen, it would be beneficial to have someone who understands the structures, the processes, and everything that comes with the job. Rudi not only brings his extensive football expertise but also his many years of service within the federation – an area in which I would have no prior experience if I became the coach. I have never represented the national team as a player, nor have I managed one before,” Klopp elaborated.
