Gautam Gambhir Under Pressure? 3 Strong Candidates to Become India's Next T20I Coach

India’s pretty rough run in T20Is carried on after a big 125 run loss to England on Tuesday, kinda of course. It was India’s biggest defeat by runs in T20I history, and in the same breath it piled on more worry for head coach Gautam Gambhir.

That loss also meant India have now slid into five matches without a win. Ever since the team lifted the T20 World Cup 2026, they haven’t quite managed to spark the kind of results people expected in this shorter format. Gambhir has helped India win two ICC titles, sure, but lately the showings have left a lot of fans frustrated, and loudly so.

Now more supporters are talking about changes, and there’s even chatter about whether the BCCI should bring in a separate coach just for T20 cricket. If that actually happens, then these three names could suddenly become serious options.

Possible India replacements for Gautam Gambhir

VVS Laxman

Former India batter VVS Laxman is considered one of the strongest candidates for that role.

Laxman has spent years working with the National Cricket Academy. He has coached the Indian team when the main coaching group was unavailable, more times than people probably notice. He’s also handled tours where a bunch of young cricketers were in the squad.

India are expected to tour Zimbabwe again with Laxman taking charge. If the team does well there, it could noticeably raise his chances of getting the job full time as India’s T20 coach.

His familiarity with young players plus a good grasp of Indian cricket is why he’s viewed as a dependable pick for the BCCI.

Dinesh Karthik

Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik is another name that could be on the list.

After he called time on international cricket, Karthik joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a mentor. Under his guidance, the franchise managed real momentum, winning back to back IPL titles.

The BCCI had earlier appointed Gambhir after his successful run with Kolkata Knight Riders. So if the board keeps the same line of thinking, then Karthik might end up getting a similar kind of chance.

His fresh ideas, a calm manner, and a solid feel for modern T20 cricket, make him an intriguing option for the national team, somehow.

Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra has also drawn plenty of praise for the work he’s done with Gujarat Titans.

Since joining the franchise, Nehra has helped them turn into one of the more consistent sides in the IPL. Gujarat Titans even won the title in their first season, and later they made it to two more finals.

Nehra is often described as someone who keeps things simple and pushes players to deliver their best. Many younger cricketers have improved under his direction, and that’s part of why people trust his method.

Because his track record in T20 cricket is strong, Nehra is viewed as a major candidate if the BCCI decides to look for a new T20 coach.

BCCI may wait before taking a final call

Gautam Gambhir still has a contract that runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Also, there’s no official announcement from the BCCI about any coaching change. Still, India’s recent T20 results have increased the heat on the current coaching team.

If the side keeps struggling, the BCCI could end up considering a separate coach for T20Is. In that scenario, VVS Laxman, Dinesh Karthik, and Ashish Nehra could end up among the leading names being discussed.
