The excitement surrounding Scout Motors has cooled somewhat lately, as both potential buyers and enthusiasts continue to wait for the Volkswagen-owned brand’s SUVs and pickup trucks to reach production. While the company doesn’t yet have vehicles ready for sale, that hasn’t stopped its design team from exploring creative interpretations of its upcoming lineup. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary this summer, Scout Motors has drawn inspiration from its past to create a special concept model called the "Scout Motors Spirit of ‘26."
This red, white, and blue SUV pays tribute to a chapter from when the Scout nameplate was part of the International Harvester family. In 1976, the U.S. Ski Team required transportation across the snow-covered terrain of Innsbruck, Austria, during the Winter Olympics. International Harvester stepped in, providing a fleet of 17 Scout Traveler and 1976 Scout II Traveltop vehicles, all carrying patriotic-themed exteriors that perfectly matched the spirit of the games.
Those Ski Patrol vehicles garnered significant attention for the automaker, prompting it to launch a special production version to coincide with the United States’ bicentennial celebrations. Branded as the “Spirit of ’76,” the edition featured a star-spangled-inspired livery, a Wedgwood Blue interior, a blue roll bar, and a denim-tinted soft top. A hardtop variant with added flexibility in wheelbase and powertrain options was also developed and sold under the name "Patriot."
Five decades later, Scout Motors is once again channeling that distinctly American sentiment through its latest design study. Rather than replicating the original SUV outright, the new concept uses the brand’s Rallye graphics scheme as its foundation. The vehicle sports a white base paint complemented by red and blue accents that sweep along the upper midsection of the SUV. Hidden details within the design include subtle Easter eggs, such as an image of a combine harvester at work—an homage to Scout’s International Harvester heritage. The result is a visually striking SUV concept that, unfortunately, remains unavailable for purchase.
Scout Motors does offer a small consolation for fans eager to celebrate the brand’s legacy. Alongside the concept SUV, the company has launched a new collection of patriotic merchandise inspired by the original Spirit of ’76 edition. The lineup includes themed t-shirts, a set of Igloo coolers, and a retro-style baseball cap. As for the vehicle itself, the manufacturer continues to target 2027 for the start of production, with the potential for that timeline to slip into 2028. The official Scout website currently notes that “Initial production [is] targeted for 2027, subject to change.” Whether the Spirit of ‘26 design will still hold the same nostalgic appeal by the time manufacturing begins remains to be seen.
