England defender Jarell Quansah has been given a two-match ban by FIFA following his straight red card in Sunday’s thrilling World Cup Round of 16 triumph over Mexico.

Quansah was sent off in the second half for a high tackle on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo, forcing England to finish the match with ten men. Despite being a man down, the Three Lions held firm to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory and advance into the quarter-finals.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has since confirmed that the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back will serve a two-match suspension, considering the challenge serious enough to merit an added game on top of the automatic one-match ban that comes with a straight red card. The ruling ensures Quansah will be unavailable for England’s quarter-final against Norway and, if Thomas Tuchel’s side move forward, the semi-final as well.

The Football Association had looked into the option of appealing the red card decision, but FIFA’s verdict has closed any chance of Quansah returning before a potential final. His absence marks a major setback for England, with Tuchel now expected to reorganise his defence at a critical phase of the tournament.
