BYD’s luxury-focused sub-brand Denza has officially revealed the coupé variant of its all-new Z electric hypercar, a technology-packed flagship that delivers astonishing performance figures.
Built on an updated version of the e3 platform, which also underpins the Denza Z9 GT, the new Z Coupé is driven by three powerful electric motors that together generate an impressive 1582bhp and 915lb ft of torque.
This immense output enables the Z Coupé to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 2.25 seconds, according to Denza. The Z Spider, which debuted earlier at the Beijing Motor Show, manages the same sprint in 2.3 seconds. A dedicated Racing version, equipped with a large rear wing and semi-slick tyres for enhanced grip, cuts this figure down even further to a phenomenal 1.96 seconds.
Top speeds differ slightly across the variants: both the Coupé and Spider can reach 186mph, while the Racing version achieves a top speed of 217mph.
Denza has also confirmed that a ‘Special Edition’ version is under development. This even more powerful model will exceed 1973bhp and is expected to achieve a sub-1.7-second 0-62mph time. The Special Edition will also feature an upgraded battery cooling system, aimed specifically at intense track usage.
Every variant of the Denza Z features magnetorheological suspension. The system uses a special fluid containing metallic particles that can alter its viscosity within milliseconds, reacting to magnetic signals from the chassis control unit. This enables the car to instantly adjust damping characteristics based on road surface conditions, ensuring optimal comfort and handling performance.
While the Coupé and Spider versions employ air suspension for smoother ride quality, the track-oriented Racing variant utilises conventional coil springs for maximum control. Braking performance across the range is handled by carbon-ceramic discs, with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear.
All three models share a 76kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack. The estimated range is 254 miles for the Coupé, 248 miles for the Spider, and 236 miles for the Racing. Rather than using a conventional modular layout, the battery cells are integrated directly into the chassis, which enhances torsional rigidity and structural integrity.
The battery system supports BYD’s cutting-edge ‘Flash’ ultra-fast charging technology. With access to a 1500kW charger, the battery can recharge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. BYD has announced plans to install around 300 of these ultra-rapid chargers across the UK by the end of this year.
In terms of weight, the Coupé tips the scales at 2230kg, the Racing comes in at 2250kg, and the Spider is slightly heavier at 2300kg.
The Denza Z also marks BYD’s first use of a steer-by-wire system, replacing the conventional mechanical steering rack with a completely electronic setup for improved precision and flexibility.
Inside the futuristic cabin, the Z features an 8.9-inch digital instrument cluster complemented by a 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Denza has confirmed that the car includes a simulated engine sound to enhance driving engagement, although it remains unclear whether the Z will include a virtual gearbox system similar to those used in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, Porsche Taycan E-Shift, or Honda Super-N.
While Denza has not yet officially disclosed pricing for the Z Coupé, its position as the brand’s flagship model suggests it will command a premium. Previous information indicates that the related Z9 GT shooting brake will start around £100,000.
However, Denza has now confirmed indicative pricing for the Z range: £142,900 for the Coupé, £159,900 for the Spider, and £172,900 for the Racing variant.
The Denza Z serves as a bold statement of intent from BYD’s premium division, directly targeting high-performance electric rivals such as Porsche, Polestar, and Mercedes-Benz. While it remains to be seen whether the Z will ignite widespread demand for electric hypercars, it is certain to act as a halo product that elevates Denza’s brand visibility in the fiercely competitive luxury EV segment.
