The Government of West Bengal has announced a significant financial boost for lakhs of frontline workers associated with the Health and Women & Child Development departments. The state government has declared a substantial hike in the monthly honorarium for ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and Anganwadi helpers, effective from August 1, 2026.

**What is the government's decision?**
According to the official memorandum issued by the government, the fixed monthly honorarium for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) has been raised from ₹6,250 to ₹11,250. This increase is in addition to their performance-based incentives, further boosting their total earnings.

Meanwhile, Anganwadi workers and helpers operating under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) have also received significant relief. As per the order, the monthly honorarium for Anganwadi workers has been increased to ₹14,000, while Anganwadi helpers will now receive ₹11,800 per month.

**Why is this significant?**
ASHA and Anganwadi workers are considered the backbone of the country's health and nutrition systems. These workers play a crucial role in vaccination drives, maternal and child care, nutrition programs, and public health services across both rural and urban areas. They had long been demanding an increase in their honorarium. Consequently, this move by the state government will not only raise their income but also boost their morale.

**What is the plan for the budget and funding?**
According to the government, this expenditure will be met through the relevant heads allocated in the state budget, and approval from the Finance Department has already been secured. Furthermore, the necessary funds will be released on time to ensure the implementation of the increased honorarium without delay.

**Will this have an impact similar to the 8th Pay Commission?** Although this decision is not directly linked to the 8th Pay Commission, the manner in which the salaries and honoraria of employees and workers are being increased certainly indicates that governments are focusing on improving the financial status of grassroots-level employees.
