Switzerland and Colombia are gearing up to battle for the final Quarter Final spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The victor of this encounter will move on to face either Egypt or reigning champions Argentina, who are scheduled to play their Round of 16 tie earlier in the day.
Here’s a look at who will officiate this crucial knockout fixture.
The last Round of 16 contest will be overseen by Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton.
This assignment marks his third appearance at the tournament, having previously taken charge of the group stage matches between Turkey and Paraguay, and Japan and Sweden.
Barton gained significant attention during the Turkey vs Paraguay game after dramatically issuing a red card to Miguel Almiron following a VAR review.
That particular incident made headlines as Barton became the first referee to send off a player for covering their mouth with their hand while speaking.
The 35-year-old is officiating in his second World Cup, after having managed three matches during Qatar 2022, including England’s Round of 16 clash against Senegal.
Supporting Barton on the field will be two of his compatriots, David Moran and Antonio Pupiro, who will act as assistant referees from the sidelines.
In addition, Mexican officials Katia Itzel Garcia and Sandra Ramirez have been appointed as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee, respectively.
Barton’s track record for issuing disciplinary cards has been varied. Across his three matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he handed out only three yellow cards in total.
However, during his 21 appearances in the Salvadoran domestic league across 2025 and 2026, Barton issued 12 red cards and an impressive 113 yellow cards.
Despite that reputation, he has shown more restraint in this year’s World Cup, awarding only five yellow cards alongside Almiron’s single red card.
