Xabi Alonso has shared his deep enthusiasm about the immense potential of his new Chelsea squad after officially beginning his tenure as head coach at Stamford Bridge. The 44-year-old Spaniard has urged his players to show relentless commitment during pre-season, assuring supporters that a successful new chapter is about to unfold.
Alonso begins Chelsea project
Chelsea have entered a fresh era under Alonso’s leadership, with the Spaniard signing a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge. The appointment was made by BlueCo as part of a long-term plan following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw the Blues finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European qualification. Alonso wasted no time in assembling most of his squad at Cobham on Thursday, launching a rigorous pre-season programme designed to return the London giants to their former glory.
Coach demands new culture
In his first public address since taking over, the ex-Real Madrid boss underlined the importance of total dedication and hard work as the foundation for a new winning mentality within the team. Alonso said: “You can’t hold back anything, everything is for the team. Hard work is a must. We need to create that culture; it starts here in a daily process at Cobham.”
He also expressed his excitement about the group of players at his disposal as he aims to implement an exciting and expressive style of football. The former midfielder noted: “The potential of the team and squad made me really excited—to work with them, shape a football idea, bring excitement to the stadium, and build a strong connection with the fans.”
Alonso continued: “It feels fantastic, but it’s also a huge honour. To be part of such a great club—one of the best in the world with decades of success—is a privilege. Now it’s about looking ahead and embracing the challenge.”
Rebuilding the Stamford Bridge bond
Recognising that the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge has dimmed due to growing fan frustration with the club’s hierarchy in recent years, Alonso pledged to rekindle that unity. He believes that enduring success will only come through a powerful emotional connection between the supporters and the players on the pitch.
Alonso reaffirmed his focus on restoring that relationship: “I know the energy that this stadium can generate, and we need to rebuild that energy and connection among everyone involved.”
He also sent a heartfelt message to Chelsea’s fans: “Our message is simple—we want to share the belief that good things will come if we stay united and build our collective strength. The energy must start with us, but together, we can achieve great things in the years ahead.”
Premier League move at the right time
The former midfielder feels that his transition to the Premier League has come at an ideal stage of his career. “It’s the right moment for me, after my time in Germany and Spain. I’ve always wanted to experience the Premier League, and this opportunity arrived at the perfect time—with the right club, the right feeling, and the right challenge. The Premier League is truly exciting.”
Familiar face in opening challenge
Alonso will face a stern early test when Chelsea begin their 2026-27 Premier League season on Monday, August 24, with a West London derby against Fulham. The match at Craven Cottage will see Alonso reunited with his former Liverpool teammate Alvaro Arbeloa, who has also recently taken charge of the Cottagers. This encounter will mark a significant competitive debut for both Spanish managers, each stepping into their new roles in London following their departures from the Santiago Bernabeu.
