Spain and Belgium's World Cup quarter-final encounter has already etched its place in football history.
Luis de la Fuente’s team took the lead around the 30-minute mark through Fabián Ruiz, but their advantage lasted just 11 minutes before Charles De Ketelaere equalised for Belgium, bringing the Red Devils back into the contest.
Remarkably, the Atalanta midfielder’s powerful header was the first goal Spain had conceded in a World Cup fixture since their group stage defeat to Japan back in 2022.
The reigning European champions had previously surpassed Switzerland’s long-standing record for consecutive clean sheets at the tournament, a record that had stood unbroken for 16 years.
However, Spain’s impressive defensive streak was finally halted after an incredible 649 minutes of World Cup football when De Ketelaere found the net. Their run of resilience lasted only 90 minutes longer than Switzerland’s historic mark.
With the streak now over, the question remains: can Spain regain their composure and keep their World Cup dream alive?
